We know how curious pups can be. 🐶️ And sometimes that curiosity leads them straight to the litter box!
If your faithful Fido, pooch, or puppy recently snuck a snack or "crunchy" out of your cat's litter, here's what you need to know and what to do next.

Is It Toxic If You Eat It?
No, consuming PrettyLitter does not pose a chemical or toxicity risk for your pup or poodle!
- PrettyLitter's signature formula is made from non-clumping, amorphous silica gel crystals, which are considered non-toxic. These inert minerals do not get absorbed or metabolized by the body.
- PrettyLitter Clumping, specifically, contains an additional food-grade ingredient called Guar Gum commonly used in pet food products. This is safe for both dogs and cats, and it's accidental ingestion does not pose a health risk.
While PrettyLitter is considered safe if consumed, ingesting ANY type of cat litter is not recommended so keeping it away from curious mouths is important.
Symptoms To Look Out For
Often, a physical or physiological risk is the main concern to watch out for when a dog or cat ingests any type of foreign matter not meant for consumption. This can lead to gastrointestinal effects, both mild and severe, based on how much of it was consumed.
Depending on the size and weight of your dog, and the amount of litter accidently ingested, it will likely pass through the GI tract without much trouble.
After any accidental ingestion, pet parents should keep an eye out for:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Lethargy
- Reduced appetite
- Abdominal pain or discomfort
- Inability to poop or pass stool
These signs could indicate more severe adverse effects that need veterinary attention.
When To Act vs Observe
If your dog seems uncomfortable or symptoms last longer than 24 hours, it's best to check in with your veterinarian. You should contact your vet (or an emergency clinic) if:
- Your dog ate a large amount of litter
- Your dog is very small, elderly, or has existing health conditions
- You notice persistent vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, or behavior changes
- Your dog appears distressed or in pain
For immediate guidance, you can also contact the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 (Additional fees may apply).
What Can I Do Right Now?
Comfort and monitoring is key for your dog over the next day or so. We recommend:
- Removing access to the litter box
- Ensure ample access to fresh water
- Observe your dog closely over the next 24 hours
- Don't try to induce vomiting unless instructed by a veterinary professional
Final Reassurance
While PrettyLitter is not intended for consumption, we have carefully considered the possibility of accidental ingestion during it's development. Our safety assessments ensure that, should such incidents occur, they will not cause harm to your pets.
Accidents happen and, in most cases, a small taste of PrettyLitter isn't an emergency. When in doubt, trust your instincts and your vet -- they know you and your dog best. ❤️
